Daktarin general information

What is Daktarin used for?

Daktarin oral gel is used to treat fungal infections in the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract, such as oral candidiasis (thrush) caused by the yeast candida; as well as to prevent spread of infection. How does Daktarin work?

Daktarin oral gel contains miconazole 2%, an antifungal drug, belonging to the imidazole group of antifungals. Miconazole in Daktarin oral gel is absorbed through the skin in your mouth as well as by the fungus growing on the mucosal membranes, and kills the fungus by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membrane that is not found in animal cells. Daktarin oral gel 2% weakens the fungal cell membrane, causing the cell contents to leak out, which kills the fungus, preventing the infection from spreading and relieving symptoms caused by the infection, such as rash, itching, scaling and inflammation. Miconazole in Daktarin oral gel also has antibacterial action and kills certain bacteria that can cause infection in area already infected by the yeast candida.
