Cholestin general information

What is Cholestin used for?

Cholestin, also known as Red Yeast Rice, is a dietary supplement for maintenance of healthy blood lipid levels, used by healthy adult men and postmenopausal women as part of a cholesterol maintenance program that includes a healthy low fat diet, particularly reduced saturated fats and high cholesterol foods, in combination with regular exercise. Cholestin is not intended for or recommended as a medication for treating a disease but is promoted as a natural product for maintaining cholesterol levels within the normal range and therefore promotes cardiovascular health.

How does Cholestin work?

Cholestin is derived from the yeast Monascus Purpureus Went that has been fermented on rice, and is a traditional food, recognised for its health-enhancing properties, that has been used as an herbal remedy in several Asian countries for more than two thousand years. Cholestin contains modest levels of a naturally occurring form of lovastatin, which belongs to a group of cholesterol-lowing medications called statins. Lovastatin reduces the production of cholesterol by the liver by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an important enzyme involved in cholesterol synthesis. Lovastatin only blocks cholesterol that is produced in the liver and has no effect on cholesterol that comes from fat in food, which is why a low-fat diet is important even when you are taking Cholestin. Cholestin also contains additional natural herbal products including flavones and essential fatty acids which also help maintain normal blood cholesterol levels.

The active ingredients also include polymethoxylated flavones extracted from citrus fruits, geraniol and the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA found in marine lipids.
